An optical wavelength division multiplexing transmitter and an optical output control method for an optical wavelength division multiplexing transmitter in an optical wavelength multiplexing transmission system using main signal light and OSC light. The optical wavelength multiplexing transmitter (10a) comprises a first transmitting/receiving unit (52a), a second transmitting/receiving unit (52b), and a device monitoring control unit (54). Recovery from a failure is quickly made, calculation of optical output level is stable done even when the number of multiplexed wavelengths of the main signal light is changed, and no signal source for adjustment of the received light level is necessary at the initial installation. Therefore troublesome adjustment is omitted and the reliability of transmission line is improved.
