PURPOSE: A method for recognizing a probable stroke by an area partition is provided to correct an error of recognition by making similar strokes as candidates, measuring dissimilarity of learned strokes and an inputted stroke, and constituting a character using the next candidate stroke when a stroke is recognized incorrectly. CONSTITUTION: A reference value of a distance filtering is set corresponded to a resolution and a size of a stroke for sampling input points at a predetermined interval regardless of speed of a note taking. Duplicated points and points existing at a predetermined distance are removed with respect to X,Y information of a successively inputted stroke based on the reference value. An area is classified with respect to a portion having an inputted stroke based on an accumulated angle. Characteristic values such as information to a size of a stroke in the area, location information of a selected area out of the total strokes, information to a direction of a stroke in the area, etc. are extracted with respect to the classified area. A stroke is recognized by calculating the dissimilarity with respect to the characteristic value and a characteristic value of a stroke stored in a database. If a stroke is not recognized, a candidate stroke is set and output based on the calculated result.
