The invention comprises tertiary phosphine oxides of formula: <FORM:0963560/C1/1> where R is alkyl (C1-18), cycloalkyl or aryl, any of which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen; R1 is substituted or unsubstituted aryl and R11 is alkyl. They are prepared by reacting a tertiary phosphine of formula: <FORM:0963560/C1/2> with R11OH and a peroxy compound XOOY, where X is hydrogen, alkyl or acyl and Y is hydrogen, alkyl or acyl, e.g. at 0-110 DEG C. The products may be used as gasoline additives (see Division C5) or in the extraction of heavy metal values, e.g. Ni, Co, Cu, Fe or U.ALSO:Gasoline compositions comprise up to about 10 grams/gallon of a tertiary phosphine oxide of formula <FORM:0963560/C4-C5/1> where R is alkyl (C1-18), cycloalkyl or aryl, any of which may be substituted, e.g. by halogen; R1 is substituted or unsubstituted aryl and R11 is C1-6 alkyl (for preparation see Division C2). |
