<p>Data at a desired time is retrieved with fewer accesses from a recording medium on which information is recorded in a recording system in which a signal reproducing time length is not in proportion to a data amount. A reproducing device comprising a reproducing unit for reading, from a recording medium recording managing information containing viewing information units, reproducing time information for information units and recording position information, those pieces of information, and a control unit for retrieving the recording position of an information unit based on recording position information and reproducing the information unit starting at that position. When reproducing an information unit starting at a desired reproducing time, the control unit determines an estimated linear line on which a reproducing time is in proportion to a data amount based on reproducing time information and recording position information, and retrieves an estimated recording position corresponding to a desired reproducing time based on the estimated linear line. An error between an actual reproducing time for an information unit at an estimated recording position and a desired reproducing time is calculated, and, if the error is within a specified range, the estimated recording position is specified as the recording position of the information unit at a desired reproducing time.</p> |
