Method for welding light alloy sleeves into light alloy cylinder block by cooling the sleeves during welding

A method for welding light alloy sleeves into a light alloy cylinder block and ensuring that thermal stresses are at a minimum at the operating temperature of the engine. The sleeves are welded to the block at two points while held at a lower temperature than the block. The temperature difference is selected to ensure that the thermal stresses are minimised at the operating temperatures. Laser or electron beam welding at prepared surfaces provides a secure bond. The sleeves can be fibre reinforced metal or treated ceramic.
