Screening for a class of kinases, (I), able to phosphorylate 1-deoxy-D-xylulose (II) at the 5-position, comprising a reaction mixture of suspected kinase, (II) and a compound (III) able to transfer a phosphorylation group is incubated for a predetermined time at predetermined temperature, then the conversion of (II) to its 5-phosphate (IIa) measured, is new. An Independent claim is included for a method, (M1), of preparing (IIa) by reacting (II) and (III) in presence of (I) identified by M1.
