A centrifugal separator 8 mounted in the stream of a liquid-laden gas deposits the liquid upon one surface of a porous plate 14, another, e.g. the opposite, surface of which is maintained in a wet state by a control system for the discharge of the liquid so as to draw the latter through the porous plate by capillary action. The separator is mounted for rotation in the gas-conveying duct 2 and consists of a cone made of hydrophobic material which allows only the gas to flow through it. The lower end of the cone projects within a recess 4 in the duct above the plate 14 which is made of porous metal. The water passing through the plate 14 collects in a trough 16 which is connected by a conduit 18 to a chamber 20 having a moving wall constituted by a flexible diaphragm 24 attached at its edge to one wall of a chamber 30. An outlet conduit 34 is connected to the chamber 20. Interconnected valves 32, 36 are mounted in the conduits 18, 34 so that when one is open the other is shut so that the trough 16 is always filled with liquid to wet the under-surface of the plate 14. A pressure equalizing valve 42 senses the pressure in the conduit 18 and maintains a supply of gas, e.g. nitrogen, to the chamber 30 to maintain the pressure therein equal to that in the chamber 20. The liquid from the chamber 20 may be supplied to a space vehicle connected to the conduit 34.
