<p>A two-way satellite communication system that includes a terminal (109) having a receiver unit (109a) and a transmitter unit (109b) is disclosed. The terminal is configured to transmit and receive signals to and from a hub (113) via a satellite (107). A terminal interface (505) is configured to permit exchange of data between the receiver unit (109a) and the transmitter unit (109b), wherein the receiver unit (109a) is configured to translate data received from a host (101) to a data frame that conforms to a predetermined protocol format that is supported by the hub (113). A demodulator interface (509) is coupled to an antenna (111) associated with the terminal (109) and is configured to permit exchange of the data frame between the terminal (109) and the satellite (107). The data frame conforms with a return channel frame format. A satellite-to-hub interface (511) is configured to permit receipt of the data frame at the hub (113) from the satellite (107). The hub (113) is configured to modify the data frame for transmission to an external packet switched network (105). A hub-to-terminal interface (501) is configured to support the exchange of data from the hub (113) to the terminal (109) using a multi-layer protocol.</p> |
