The starter-generator (1) has a rotor (3) in the form of a torsional vibration damper mounted on the forward end (4) of the engine's crankshaft (5). A spring element (14) is mounted between the rotor and its hub (15) or a bearer plate attached to the crankshaft. The flywheel mass of the rotor and the spring element are matched to achieve a damping effect.
