<p>A process for preparing 5-substituted-2(5H)-furanones of the general formula (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, or optionally substituted aralkyl; and R2 is optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted alkenyl, or optionally substituted aralkyl, characterized by reacting a compound of the general formula (II) wherein R1 is as defined above; and X is halogeno with an alcohol of the general formula (III) wherein R2 is as defined above under nonaqueous conditions in the presence of a base selected from the group consisting of lithium carbonate, sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, sodium hydrogencarbonate, and potassium hydrogencarbonate.</p> |
