<p>An electro-desorption compression system (10, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600) comprises an enclosure (30) which includes a sorbent positioned between first and second spaced-apart conductors (14, 14', 16, 16'), a sorbate capable of forming with the sorbent a sorbate/sorbent compound (18, 18'), and a power supply (20) connected to the first and second conductors (14, 14', 16, 16') to conduct an electrical current through the sorbate/sorbent compound (18, 18') for desorbing the sorbate from the sorbent in a substantially non-thermal desorption reaction, and a pressure chamber (22, 56, 58, 76, 92) connected to the enclosure (30) and which receives the sorbate from the enclosure (30) during desorption and which releases the sorbate into the enclosure (30) during an absorption reaction. The absorption and desorption reactions are repeated to cyclically pass the sorbate between a relatively low pressure state during absorption and a relatively high pressure state during desorption.</p> |
