The airbag unit has a movable cover(1), the opening movement of which takes place in a tangential direction towards the outer face(3) of the trim section in the region of the cover. The airbag(5) is fitted under the trim so that its initial expansion takes place in the aforesaid tangential direction. The cover consists of a base component(11) which covers the opening in the trim section, and an additional section(7) against which impacts the expanding airbag and effects movement of the base component into the position in which the opening is freed.
