[Also in Division H1] A gas chromatograph detector has an ionization chamber provided with electrodes 9, 10 and a discharge chamber provided with an electrode gap 14,15, means for supplying a sample gas to the ionization chamber, means for independently supplying helium or argon to the discharge chamber, and power sources connected to electrodes 9, 10 and to the discharge electrodes 14, 15, the arrangement being such that the helium or argon is subject to a discharge at the discharge gap and then joins the sample gas in the ionization chamber thereby supplying primary electrons. These electrons excite atoms of the argon carrier gas to ionise the sample, the ionisation current indicating the concentration of the sample. In another arrangement (Fig. 4) argon is again used as carrier gas for the sample and is supplied through hollow electrode 31, while helium is supplied to the discharge gap between electrodes 39, 40. Outlet 51, is connected to a gas flow meter. The production of a stable arc discharge in helium is discussed in the Specification. A discharge electrode spacing of less than 1. 5 mins is necessary. By varying the discharge voltage the sensitivity of the device may be adjusted.
