The method detects and evaluates the propagation of smells close to their source. Between three and ten weather stations (1) at different locations record meteorological data. At the same time concentration of odors is recorded by between one and twenty measuring apparatus (2) at different locations. Also, at the same time, the distance between the weather stations and the measuring devices is measured by between three and ten directional transmitters and a directional receiver. The measurement data at each measurement time is fed to a computer and analyzed. The qualitative identification of the smells is made using the main axis transformation process and the quantitative smell measurement is made using a neuronal network.
