964,662. Open hearth furnaces. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORPORATION. June 18, 1963 [July 9, 1962], No. 24280/63. Heading F4B. Solid scrap charged into an open hearth furnace is melted rapidly by providing additional oxyfuel burners 28, 30, 32 vertically suspended and movably mounted in elongated roof slots 34, 36, 38 on carriages 72 oscillated longitudinally of the furnace by rods 94 actuated by fluid cylinders 110. Each carriage 72 comprises vertical angle members 74, an upper rectangular frame 78 carrying grooved rollers 84 engaging tracks 57, 59, and a baseplate 76 formed with a central opening 96 through which extends the burner attached to a collar 98. Tie rods 108 carry a cover 104 enclosing the burner and sliding on a rectangular, water-cooled chamber 35 defining the roof slot. The rods 94 attached to the carriages have turn-buckles 97 by which individual carriages or a cylinder 110 may be detached. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown), an additional fluid cylinder 110 is provided for the central carriage, drive rods and turnbuckles being so disposed that each carriage can be operated separately.
|
