A hardware authentication system/method for equipment 10 including at least one removable hardware component 12 comprises a processing unit 14 within the equipment 10 that includes a first pseudo-random number generator 16 responsive to at least one non-deterministic event for generating a pseudo-random number. A second pseudo-random number generator 20 is provided within the removable hardware component 12. The second pseudo-random number generator 20 is also responsive to the at least one non-deterministic event and generates a pseudo-random number. The processing unit 14 compares the pseudo-random numbers generated by the first and second pseudo-random number generators 16, 20 to detect coincidence and thereby determine authenticity of the hardware component. Non-coincidence inhibits operation. The equipment 10 may be a telephone private branch exchange, the removable component 12 may be a circuit line card, and the non-deterministic event may be busy state of a line card circuit (off-hook condition).
