A wood-chipping machine comprises a cylindrical body member 10 having arranged in each of a number of peripheral recesses 36 a paring cutter 12 which, together with its holder 13, is held in the recess by interlocking adjustable means 14, 28, 29 and pressed against the wall 26 of the recess by a wedge-shaped pressure-bar 15; an insert 19 is fitted in the mouth of the recess 36 so as to be flush with the periphery of the member 10, leave a slot 24 leading to a chip-collecting space 25 in the pressure-bar, and be spaced slightly above the upper surface of the bar 15. The cutter 12, Fig. 1, which is interlocked in a recess 36 by a pair of holders 14, is set for cutting chips of depth p by a graduated adjustment screw 30 acting on each holder 14 which, after adjustment is locked in position by a screw 29. The pressure-bar 15 is spring- pressed outwardly to clamp the cutter and holder against the wall 26 and also the depending leg of the insert 19 against the wall 27. The cutter 12, Fig. 5, is inclined to the axis of the carrier 10 while in front of each cutter are several side-by-side scoring cutters 31 which determine the axial length of the chips, the length being such that the chip in its axial length will bridge the width of the inclined slit and pass into the space 25. These scoring cutters 31, shown in Figs. 5 and 10, are finely adjustable similarly to the paring cutters and are secured at equal distances apart in a plate 51 which is supported by a pre-adjusted stop 56. Chips collected in the spaces 25 may be blown out by compressed air fed from the central shaft of the carrier; alternatively, air may be blown into the space as shown in Fig. 5 by means of vanes 39 carried for rotation with the member 10; the chips are arranged to be evacuated in each case after the space 25 has left the chipping zone. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8a, the chips are blown out in the axial direction, vanes 45, 49 then circulating the air while ribs provided on the casing 50 loosen chips that are jammed and an extra air blowing device 147 directs compressed air into the space from a central shaft 150. Instead of providing scoring cutters 31 to determine the length of the chips to be cut the same effect may be obtained by using cutters 12 having stepped or interrupted cutting edges.</p> |
