PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a recombinant hepatitis B virus surface antigen that permits producing a large amount of recombinant hepatitis B virus surface antigens having a high antigenic activity, and to provide a recombinant hepatitis B virus surface antigen. SOLUTION: This method for preparing a recombinant hepatitis B virus surface antigen comprises deleting 23 amino acids or more from N-end of hepatitis B virus S antigen.
