A process for making discrete diamond particles from a solid material containing an allotropic form of carbon other than diamond by subjecting said solid material to Joule effects sublimation conditions and/or plasma-forming conditions and/or to conditions producing an at least partially ionized gas in a vessel maintained at a pressure not above 3,000 bars and containing an inert or reducing gas.
