PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly heat-resistant hydrocarbon adsorbent which is excellent in the adsorbing volume and adsorbing/holding power of hydrocarbon and of which the hydrocarbon adsorbing capacity is not affected by an atmosphere of gas to be treated. SOLUTION: The hydrocarbon adsorbent containing an alkali metal but no alkaline earth metal and a transition metal is brought into contact with gas to be treated to adsorb and remove a hydrocarbon.
