[Also in Division B8] A tearable strip for opening a sealed aluminium can and forming part of the can wall has secured to it a pull tab 28, Fig. 5, which may be of synthetic resin 54, Fig. 10. The tab 28 has a boss 30 inserted in a hole or in a boss, Fig. 6 (not shown), formed in the strip 24 and then the boss 30 is crimped as at 32 together with the strip boss if present. The pull tab may be holed and a boss on the strip inserted and crimped, Fig. 8 (not shown). A plug portion 57 on the synthetic resin pull tab 54, Fig. 10, is snapped into a flared-edge opening 55 in the strip 53. The edge of the opening 66, Fig. 15, in the metal strip 65 may be inturned, the plug 64 being inserted with punch 76 and die 81. A spring-loaded ejector pin 80 forces the parts from the die ring 81 as the punch is withdrawn. The edge of the plug may be curled back around the opening edge, Fig. 13 (not shown). In a plain opening, Fig. 14 (not shown), the plug edge may be curled outwardly and then back towards the plug exterior to form a bead. |
