Mixtures of acetonitrile and acrylonitrile, especially such mixtures produced by the vapour phase reaction at elevated temperature of propylene, ammonia and molecular oxygen, are separated by extractive distillation in the presence of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol or glycerol, preferably in admixture with water, especially from 20-80% by weight thereof. The process may be carried out by feeding the mixtures of nitriles and that comprising the glycol together or at separate points to a distillation column, withdrawing purified acrylonitrile containing water overhead and acetonitrile glycol as base product. Acetonitrile and glycol can be separated by distillation and the glycol recovered may be recirculated. The examples describe the use of aqueous ethylene glycol. |
