PURPOSE: A power supply apparatus is provided to allow power in a waiting state to be suppressed at maximum and energy saving to be executed further efficiently. CONSTITUTION: A power supply apparatus comprises a power supply transformer; an excitation circuit portion(50) to be provided on a primary side of the power supply transformer and to excite the power supply transformer with an alternating current power supply; and a control circuit portion(60) provided on a secondary side of the power supply transformer, to start an operation by the power supply transformer in an excitation state, and to cause the excitation circuit portion to operate intermittently. The excitation circuit portion includes a switching element(5,6) to switch supply of the alternating current power supply to the power supply transformer; a direct current voltage generating circuit to generate a direct current voltage for causing the switching element to operate; and a photocoupler(PH) to insulate the excitation circuit portion and the control circuit portion in between and to intermediate a control signal output from the control circuit portion to the switching element.
