PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a miniaturized illuminator having high luminance and an image reader utilizing the illuminator. SOLUTION: The image reader utilizing the illuminator is composed of the illuminator, with which reflected light from the surface of an original 20 illuminated by the light emission of an organic EL element 22 can be emitted from a transparent part, equipped with transparent contact glass 21 having a first side in contact with the original surface and an opposite second side, the organic EL element 22 having a band-like light emitting area formed on the second side along with the outside of the transparent part while setting the second side with the band-like transparent part for forming an information extracting area for extracting light from an area to become the target of image read on the first side through the second side and a wiring means for supplying operating power to the organic EL element 22, a photodetector array 24 located under the transparent part parallel to the transparent part, and a lens array 23 for forming the image of light from the original illuminated by the illuminator on the photodetector array 24.
