PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact electromagnetic switch for pressuring a movable contact with high holding force onto a fixed contact along with being compact. SOLUTION: The electromagnetic switch has a cup 3 shaped yoke 1 rotationally symmetrically on the base portion 4 wherein a permanent magnet 5 is disposed. Magnetic flux of the permanent magnet 5 is carried to an armature 11 in a board shape through a core 6 having a core flange 8 in a radial direction. A relation between a magnetic resistance WA in an actuating space formed by the armature 11, the core 6, and the yoke 1 and a magnetic resistance WR in a peripheral space between the core flange 8 and the yoke 1, WA<WR is established. As the result of rotationally symmetry of the yoke 1 having the cup 3 shape, though it has a small volume, a high holding force for the armature 11 can be generated.
