PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber which is excellent in visual quality in an illumination application utilizing the lateral light leakage characteristic of the optical fiber and a method for manufacturing the same as well as an illumination device using such optical fiber. SOLUTION: This plastic optical fiber has a length of >=100 m and the total number of the light leakage quantity peaks at the overall length of the plastic optical fiber when the average value for each 1 m of the lateral light leakage quantity of a prescribed length is measured and the number of the light leakage quantity peaks having the light leakage quantity of >=4 times the same is measured is >=10 pieces.
