PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fault diagnosing device which can diagnose the fault of a displacement detector with high accuracy and a diagnosis method used by the device. SOLUTION: The fault diagnosing device 2 diagnoses the fault of the displacement detector 1 provided with a core and two detection coils, the inductance of which differentially changes correspondingly to the displacement of the core. The device 2 is provided with first detecting means 22a, 22c, 23a, and 23b which detect the inductance changes of the detection coils by converting the changes into voltage changes, second detecting means 22b, 22d, 23c, and 23d which detect the inductance changes of the detection coils by converting the change into voltage changes separately from the first detecting means 22a, 22c, 23a, and 23b, a first deviated voltage detecting means 24a which detects a first deviated voltage from two voltages detected by the first detecting means 22a, 22c, 23a, and 23b. The device 2 is also provided with a second deviated voltage detecting means 24b which detects a second deviated voltage from two voltages detected by the second detecting means 22b, 22d, 23c, and 23d and a fault discriminating means 5 which discriminates the fault of the detector 1 based on the first and second deviated voltages.
