PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input/output device for outputting an image without a large capacity memory inside an engine unit. SOLUTION: This device has plural drum units 210-213 capable of outputting color images in yellow, magenta and cyan or the like or black-and-white images, is connected with a plotter, a FAX equipment or an image input device by a PCI bus, becomes a bus master as needed and reads image data into the memories of respective devices at timing suitable for the respective drums. Besides, encoded image data are read out of the memory of the plotter, the FAX equipment or the image input device and extended inside the image input/ output device so that the image can be outputted. Further, since a compressor/ expander is provided and the image can be outputted being compressed, the memory of the plotter, the FAX equipment or the image input device can be effectively used. Moreover, since a time difference is absorbed in the order of compression, it is not necessary to consider the time difference, either, and a page memory on the side of engine unit can be eliminated.
