PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical device which prevents heat generation by lowering the resistance of passage current during current constriction and also controls transverse mode. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor optical device, a compound semiconductor layer which includes an active layer is formed on a substrate, and a current constriction layer having an opening part between the substrate and the active layer is formed.
