PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a highly accurate detection of incomplete combustion with a carbon monoxide sensor. SOLUTION: The temperature characteristic of a solid electrolyte plate 11 determining the carbon monoxide detection characteristic of a sensor 17 is optimized by adjusting the power supplied to a heater 15 for heating. A thermal power adjusting means 18 is arranged so as to turn ON a power source cyclically in a shorter time even while the heater 15 is OFF beyond a set temperature. This achieves a higher temperature accuracy of the heater 15 thereby stabilizing the carbon monoxide detection characteristic of the sensor 17 having the temperature characteristic.
