PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a magnetic recording medium having an excellent- smoothness magnetic layer and showing high electromagnetic conversion characteristic suitable for high-density recording. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium comprises a coating step to apply a coating material 3, which is used for forming a pseudo lower layer and contains the solvent having 150 deg.C or higher boiling point, and a magnetic coating material 4, which is obtained by dispersing ferromagnetic powder in a binder, onto a nonmagnetic support 1 travelling to the prescribed direction in this order, the first smoothing step to push/smooth the surface of the applied coating material 4 so that the thickness of the coating material 4 is made to be t and the second smoothing step to vaporize the applied coating material 3 and push/smooth the surface of the applied coating material 4 in such a state that the support 1 is contacted with the coating material 4 so that the thickness of the coating material 4 layer is made to be t'. The compressibility shown by 100×(t-t')/t is made to be 50% or higher to 60% or lower.
