PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder capable of accurately measure the angle of a rotor by forming a scale having a pattern especially in the rotor instead of a rotary encoder for detecting angle, and reading the scale. SOLUTION: The encoder of this invention is constituted of a rotor and a stator, and the scale formed in the rotor spatially varies the line width. Patterns arranged with equal pitches are provided in turn in the rotational direction of the rotor. A scale detection means reads the pattern of the scale and detects the rough precision of the rotation angle from the positions of the patterns so that the periodic data obtained from the pattern with fine precision the rotation angle is obtained with Fourier transform.
