PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormal state of pulse series digital signals from an encoder with a software method. SOLUTION: All angle position information determined by the pulse signals from the encoder is divided by 4 and these who have remainders of 0, 1, 2 and 3 are classified and counted to calculate the generation probability of position information having remainders of 0, 1, 2 and 3. Whether or not the generation probability is less than a specific probability is distinguished. If the generation probability in a specific region is 15% or less for example, an abnormality of the encoder is judged.
