PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable liquid crystal element of which the variation in the voltage-transmittance curve is suppressed as much as possible even when the element is continuously driven under a practical driving condition. SOLUTION: A chiral smectic liquid crystal exhibits a phase transition sequence, starting from the higher temperature side, an isotropic liquid phase(ISO.)-a cholesteric phase(Ch)-a chiral smectic C phase or an ISO.-a chiral smectic C phase. One of substrates is provided with active elements connected with electrodes corresponding to respective pixels. With respect to voltage- transmittance characteristics of the chiral smectic liquid crystal element, when the voltage-transmittance curve A measured immediately after temperature decrease from the ISO plane or Ch phase and the voltage-transmittance curve B measured after driven one or more seconds at a driving voltage higher than the voltage for obtaining transmittance which is >=50% of the saturation transmittance value of the curve A are compared with each other, higher transmittance is obtained with the curve B than with the curve A at the same voltage.
