PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of decreasing the volume of radioactive waste capable of accurately evaluating the radiation value of the waste irrespective of the amount of cesium, disposing metallic waste as it is large without melting while maintaining an excellent volume reduction ratio, eliminating the wasteful use of energy, and reducing the waste treating cost. SOLUTION: A radioactive waste 4 is sorted into a metallic waste 2 and a nonmetallic waste 3, only the nonmetallic waste 3 is put into the furnace main body 5 of a melting furnace 1 having a heating container 10 installed on the inner wall surface thereof to heat and melt the nonmetallic waste 3 in the fusion furnace 1 through the heating container 10. Then, the molten nonmetallic waste 3 is put into a container 11 having the metallic waste 2 stored therein beforehand to decrease the volume thereof.
