PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a regenerative signal evaluating method which is capable of evaluating the regenerative signals obtained from an information recording medium recorded with prescribed information at high density with good accuracy. SOLUTION: This method has a step (ST11) of obtaining the regenerative signal from the information recording medium recorded with the digital information by recording marks of different sizes, a step (ST12) for obtaining the amplitude of the first regenerative signal in which the digital information recorded by the recording mark of the largest size is reflected, a step (ST13) of determining the amplitude of the second regenerative signal in which the digital information recorded by small recording mark of the next smallest size is reflected, a step (ST14) of determining an evaluation value from a ratio of the amplitude of the first and second regenerative signals and a step (ST15) of evaluating the characteristics of the regenerative signals by the evaluation value.
