PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element having no upper limit on preservation temperature and with less deterioration in driving such as display sticking in the practical temperature region for use. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element is provided with a chiral smectic liquid crystal, a pair of electrodes, a pair of substrates subjected to uniaxial aligning treatment and a polarizing plate at least on one of the substrates. The liquid crystal exhibits a phase transition sequence, starting from the higher temperature side, an isotropic liquid phase-a cholesteric phase (Ch)-a chiral smectic C phase (SmC*) or an isotropic liquid phase-a chiral smectic C phase. At least one out of the pair of the substrates is provided with active elements connected with electrodes corresponding to respective pixels. The chiral smectic liquid crystal element is equipped with a means to impart a potential difference between the pair of the substrates in a state without an externally applied electric field in a temperature region of (Tc-2 deg.C)-(TC+2 deg.C) where the Ch-SmC* phase transition temperature is expressed as Tc. |
