PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recording reproducing device and a recording medium whose data retrieval is possible by using directory data recorded on an one preceding recording block when the recording/reproducing of the directory data cannot be performed. SOLUTION: The data recording reproducing device is provided with the main recording part to record data, an auxiliary recording part to record the data of the main recording part on the attachable and detachable recording medium, a first recording/reproducing means which records and reproduces data and the directory data for every recording block in a first recording area of the recording medium of the auxiliary recording part, a second recording/ reproducing means which records and reproduces a signal showing a recording starting position of the directory data in a second recording area of the recording medium and a control means to control the first and the second recording/ reproducing means. The directory data are composed of the directory data of the 1 recording block and the directory data recorded before the one block of the recording block. The data are recorded on the recording medium with this data recording reproducing device.
