A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary cell having a negative electrode which comprises core particles comprising a solid phase (A) and a coating layer comprising a solid phase (B) covering at least a part of the surface of the core particle, wherein the solid phase (A) comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of silicon, tin and zinc, the solid phase (B) comprises a solid solution or an intermetallic compound containing an element constituting the solid phase (A) and at least one of the elements belonging to Groups 2 to 14 and exclusive of silicon, tin, zinc and carbon, and either the solid phase (A) or the solid phase (B) is amorphous. The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary cell has a high capacity and also is reduced with respect to irreversible capacity, while maintaining good cycle characteristics. |
