The device comprises a measurement unit (1) that is mounted in a half-cardanic and damped manner on the wearer's belt or similar. The measurement unit includes a radar sensor that scans the ground ahead of the wearer at a constant angle to enable the wearer's speed and distance traveled to be determined. Optimally the sensor can be linked in a wireless manner to a display on the wearer's wrist or similar. The invention also relates to a system with integrated microelectronics for determination of distance covered, average speed, etc. as well as instantaneous speed.
