The method involves spraying a liquid medium at normal temperature onto the hot combustion residues as a high pressure jet with regulated, variable water flow from the outside through an open boiler hatch during operation of the steam boiler. The liquid medium can be water and/or fire-fighting water and/or process water with a normal temperature of about 10 to 40 degrees C and maximum pressure of 16 bars.
