A method of protecting an electrical line (2) by means of an electronic switching element (4) looped into the electric line (2), in which a temperature characteristic (TS) of a switching element is detected and the temperature characteristic is tested for the presence of a switch-off/disconnection criterion. The electronic switching element is switched off/disconnected with occurrence of a switch-off/disconnection criterion. The switch-off/disconnection criterion comprises the exceeding of a temperature threshold/limit ((T2 + T3)/2), or more specifically, the exceeding of a temperature threshold/limit (T1).
