The gas vending system has a reservoir (3) for gas bottles (2) from which the gas bottles can be withdrawn under access control and/or to which the gas bottles can be returned, preferably under access control, and at least one filling station (12) outside the reservoir for filling the gas bottles with the gas. The reservoir can accommodate at least one gas bottle transport mechanism.
