An apparatus for promoting desired sand distribution into a mold flask (34) in a foundry process, characterized by a proximal distribution plate (31) mounted subjacent a hopper (32), a distal distribution plate (36) slidably mounted subjacent to the proximal distribution plate (31), and a masking plate assembly mounted subjacent to the distal distribution plate (36). The proximal distribution plate (31) includes a series of primary apertures (33), while the distal distribution plate (36) includes a series of repeating secondary apertures (37) therethrough, with each series of secondary apertures (37) corresponding to one primary aperture (33). The masking plate assembly includes a masking plate (46) having a series of masking plate bores (52) traversing therethrough, with each masking plate bore (52) corresponding to each secondary aperture (37). Each masking plate bore (52) includes a principal diameter (D1) extending through the masking plate (46), with the principal diameter (D1) determining the flow rate of sand through the masking plate (46).
