When the object is the mouth of a patient and X-ray images of a tooth are being taken the presence of metal fillings in adjacent teeth intersecting the X-ray beam is undesirable. To avoid this the patent describes how the X-ray projector and camera can be positioned relative to the jaw to avoid this depending on the type of investigation in hand.
