The present invention relates to a system for effecting electronic transactions between an end user and a provider of goods or services against a cash payment made by the end user, which system comprises: a plurality of end user individual apparatuses, at each of which an end user can enter details of a transaction to be effected with a specified provider and can make payment by cash for that transaction; and means located at said end user apparatus for receiving and verifying a cash payment for a transaction to be effected and to store that payment securely to await collection by or on behalf of an operator of a server computer within the system in communication with the end user apparatus.
