In a process for coloring keratin fibers, especially human hair, by applying a formulation containing : (A) color precursor(s) and (B) a simple ruthenium (Rh) salt and/or a Ru complex with acyclic ligands and rinsing this off after an action time, the Ru salt and/or Ru complex is not enclosed in the pores of cage compounds. An Independent claim is also included for this colorant.
