The invention relates to a pre-cleaning and scalding plant for animals for slaughter, comprising a pre-cleaning device (4) with a water supply device (14) for supplying water for pre-cleaning animals for slaughter (38) to the working chamber (30) of the pre-cleaning device (4) and a scalding device (6), operating according to the condensation principle and comprising a water spray device (16) for introducing the water in a fine spray into the scalding medium of the scalding device (6). The invention is characterized in that the water supply device (14) and the water spray device (16) are connected to a common water decarbonization device (10) or are respectively connected to their own water decarbonization device, whereby said water decarbonization device(s) is (are) configured in such a way that water with a maximum carbonate hardness of 6 DEG d is supplied.
