The stacking device has a pivot unit, allowing an open container (3) for reception of stacked mail items to pivot between a container replacement position in which the open side faces upwards and a mail item reception position in which the open side faces sidewards, for sidewards insertion of the mail items. In the container replacement position a stacking aid (12) with a sidewall (15), an angled stacking base (17) and a guide (14) is inserted in the empty container, with subsequent removal from the full container.
