Method uses a gamma detector probe for detection of incident gamma radiation. To determine the azimuthal angle of origin of the incident radiation a whole horizontal plane is divided into segments, e.g. three segments of 120 degrees, and the radiation incident from each section is measured. Results for the different segments can then be compared. The invention also relates to a geophysical gamma borehole detector for carrying out the above method. Probe comprises gamma detector (4) and shielding (3) that can be arranged so that only radiation from a certain segment is received by the probe.
